Yesterday Scene Magazine held a photo shoot at The Out NYC hotel. It was such a fun experience and I learned so much. It was my first time at a photo shoot! I’ll describe to you the experience that I had setting up and packing up the clothing and accessories.
I arrive at the hotel at 9am. The bags of (menswear, it was a shoot for the Men’s issue) clothing are arriving from the office. Each designer sends a bag of samples. The fashion director chooses specific pieces, but they include additional pieces in the bags. There are probably several hundred different pieces ranging from simple v-neck shirts to outrageous Versace patterned pants and jackets (pictured below). All of the items must be returned. We begin to organize all the clothes and accessories. Accessories go by type, shoes together, and then clothes organized by designer in piles, but each piece has to be visible from underneath the pile. (picture below of the crazy mess) There were so many watches that there was a security guard that had to stay in the room with the clothes just to watch over the watches. The pieces selected to possibly be featured are placed in another room where they are laid out together to form a look. I also learned so much about menswear, which is something I really don’t know much about.

A CORNER of the fashion madhouse. Please note that visible space is stepping space (we didn’t have enough racks) and was later reduced to barely enough room to fit a penny. This was so great. A clothing cloud!
After the photos had been shot we had to return all the clothes to the right bags by designers. Some were from PR Agencies that sent out their clients pieces to magazines like Scene, so even if something was Ralph Lauren, for example, it didn’t necessarily go in the Ralph Lauren bag. This took about five of us over two hours to complete. Then, today we addressed the bags to the return addresses and sent them back.
Everyone on the job was so much fun from the hair stylist to the other interns to the cute model (who’s name I will not reveal– surprise!!), by the end we we are joking around trying on the most insane outfits. Miraculously, even though I was amongst cashmere scarves and sweaters, I barely noticed that it was almost 100 degrees out! (And we were outside part of the time!) I had a wonderful time.
