The past week has been utterly chaotic, both good and bad. I’m entirely focused on working on my school’s yearbook (as in 3AM every night) which is why I’ve had a hard time posting frequently. I was also sick and then went on a retreat with my senior class, which was surprisingly super fun! I’ve never enjoyed a school retreat before, as I never understood why we needed to be in the middle of nowhere, but I had a fun time and my grade bonded really well. But while I was in the middle of nowhere, Rick Owens dominated the center of everywhere in Paris with his rejection of conventional and fashionable beauty.
His show, which featured women of all shapes and sizes making stink faces and dancing and walking in a synchronized choreography, differed wildly from the underweight, expressionless model robots that we’re so used to. While I must admit the clothes themselves were not quite exciting, the concept of evolving our perception of beauty is so refreshing and needed that I give Rick Owens five stars. The positive response of the fashion industry was also quite rewarding. Vogue called it “major, major, major” and “exhilaration inducing,” and style.com called it a “revelation.” This shows how ready we are for a change in the fashion norm. It is up to the designers to create these types of trends, and hopefully this is only the beginning of an expanded notion of beauty among the fashion world.
